Certification Schemes
The Wheel of Sustainability may be applied to examine the sustainability issues that are voiced in various certification schemes. In the aquaculture industry, farms or their produce is often certified to ensure the customer that certain standards are met at the farm and/or in the production cycle. To explicate which issues and by what standards these certification schemes promote sustainability, we have here coded eight of most commonly used certification schemes in accordance with the Wheel of Sustainability.
Bear in mind that while the Wheel of Sustainability is a broad encompassing framework, specific certification schemes are often more narrow-focused on specific issues. Fish farmers are therefore often certified in compliance to more than one scheme.
